Oil Paintings - Fine Art before the invention of cameras and other ways to mechanically capture an image, portrait painting served to capture the likeness of an individual across cultures. Paintings have been done in a variety of mediums and on varying canvases, including board, ivory and porcelain. Often, it was what was available in a particular area or time that influenced the material used. Commissioning a portrait was often a sign of wealth and many historians, curators, dealers and collectors are able to determine the age of a painting by studying background details and clothing where there are no signatures and/or dates. Many portraits have a detailed provenance that allows the sitters, and often the artists, to be identified. The Atlanta Antique Gallery's fine art collection extends far beyond portraits and includes Folk Art, signed Prints, Landscapes, Abstracts and Sculptures, to mention a few. We at the Atlanta Antique Gallery are convinced that you will find our collection of fine art antiques worthy of a browse. Our artists include George Henri Carre, Samual Marseden Brookes and Maris Salmins. We are continually adding to our Fine Art Category, so check back often.
