Earthenware Picher with Sappho Motif. Circa 1860. An example of an earthenware pitcher by John Bell & Matthew Peterson Bell, Glasglow, Scotland. Bearing the figure of Sappho (c613 - 570BC), an ancient Greek Poetess. One hairline under glaze on lower portion of handle (manufacturing flaw) and one open line fracture inside the handle at top (also manufacturing flaw). Age related wear to the handle and upper edge of spout. Measures 8 3/4 inches tall x 5 3/4 inches wide.
