
In the first quarter of the 20th century, attitudes regarding cosmetics changed drastically. The use of make-up during the day was no longer looked upon with disdain. As women became "liberated," and as more and more of them entered the business world, the use of cosmetics became a routine and necessary part of a woman's grooming. Portable containers for cosmetics became a necessity.
Vintage compacts are made in myriad shapes, styles, combinations and motifs, all reflecting the mood of the times. Every conceivable natural or man-made material was used in the manufacture of antique compacts. Commemorative, premium, souvenir, patriotic, figural, Art Deco and enamel compacts are a few examples of the types of antique compacts that were made in the United States and abroad.
